A Brief History of Silver Coinage in Bolivia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Casa de Moneda (Mint House) at Potos\u00ed was established in 1574, just decades after the Spanish conquest, and would operate almost continuously until the 19th century. At its peak output, Potos\u00ed’s silver flooded European and Asian markets through the Manila Galleon trade routes, making the Piece of Eight \u2014 the 8 Reales coin \u2014 the world’s first de facto global currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Bolivia declared independence from Spain in 1825, the republic continued striking silver coins at Potos\u00ed. An 1864 currency reform replaced the old colonial-derived Real system with a decimal Boliviano system of 100 centavos, bringing Bolivian coinage in line with other Latin American nations. Silver Boliviano coins were struck through 1909, after which silver disappeared from circulation coinage as the country reduced costs and adjusted to changing metal prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colonial Era: Macuquinas and Milled Coins (1574\u20131825)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most visually striking Bolivian silver coins are the macuquinas<\/em> \u2014 the hand-struck cob coins (also called “cobs” or reales de cizalla<\/em>) produced from roughly 1574 to the mid-1700s. Collector premiums for colonial Bolivian coins, particularly cobs with readable dates and assayer marks, run well above melt. Potos\u00ed Mint Mark<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Virtually all Bolivian silver coins carry the Potos\u00ed mint mark \u2014 “PTS” as a monogram on colonial coins, and “PO” or the full monogram on republic issues.
