East Africa Silver Coinage

The East African shilling was the currency issued for use in British controlled areas in East Africa from 1921 until 1969.

While most British controlled territories were based on the pound sterling, the shilling was considered the primary unit currency of East Africa.

Most coinage produced as East African shillings were minted from bronze or cupronickel. However, some coinage was produced in silver.

Silver coins from East Africa included the 3 pence and 6 pence coins from 1913 until 1920. Also, the 1 shilling and 2 shillings coins minted from 1913 until 1920 were minted of a silver alloy.

From 1913 until 1919 the 3 pence and 6 pence coins were minted from an alloy of .925 silver. In 1920, the 3 pence and 6 pence coins were minted with .500 silver fineness.

The 1 shilling and 2 shillings coins were minted from sterling silver with a .925 finess from 1913 until 1920. The 2 shillings coin was also minted in 1920 with a .500 silver fineness.
