Several different silver coins were in circulation during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The 1 Gersh coin was minted from 1897 to 1903. It was minted in .835 fineness with an approximate silver weight of 1.17 grams. 

The 1/4 Birr was minted from 1895 to 1903. It too was minted in .835 fineness with an approximate silver weight of 5.86 grams. 

The 1 Birr was minted from 1900 to 1903 in .835 fineness. Each 1 Birr coin contained 23.45 grams of silver. 

In 1944, the 50 Santeem coin was minted. The silver purity was 80%. Eac 50 Santeem coin contains 5.62 grams of silver.
