During the time when Tunisia was a French colony the franc was the predominant currency. The Tunisian Franc coins were minted from 1891 until 1942 in various denominations.

From 1891 until 1921, silver coins in denominations of 50 centimes, 1 franc and 2 francs were minted in .835 silver fineness.

Minting of coins was halted and did not begin again until 1930. From 1930 until 1942, Tunisian Franc coins were minted in silver with denominations of 10 francs and 20 francs. A 5 francs silver coin was minted from 1935 until 1939.
